Mad skills?

Had a sub in Math class today, he saw me staring blankly at the worksheet and started berating me. He was under the impression that I was merely a lazy student, while I insisted that my mind is simply not wired for mathematics. I pointed out that my gift is probably on the creative side of things, particularly writing, and that I do well in my English classes. I told him that I can get mathematical stuff, but only with extended one-on-one tutor sessions, which I get for math.

To make me prove it, he had me write 150 words on numbers. So, I did. Here they are. Done in 20 minutes in longhand:

" If God had any one language, it would be that of numbers. The world is made of numbers – the unchanging constants that make our environment what it is, the infinite imaginable numerical relationships between any two physical bodies, the absolute scale and limit of time. In the observable universe, numbers can do anything. It can be said without any spirituality that if you could see all the numbers that are out there, we could project the fate of the Earth and expose free will itself as an illusion. No, I would never underestimate the importance of numbers.
But just because numbers are omnipotentially important doesn’t mean I particularly care about them. Eight X squared divided by two Z to the fourth is simply never going to become a major factor in my life as a human being. I say this knowing full well that I am not going to be the physicist who works out how many dimensions there are in the multiverse, or even the architect who builds a house whose room layout is a fractal of heptagons. I write. My job is to live, think, and feel, and the products of those endeavors will hopefully be what I give back to the world. I’ll leave the number-crunching to the scientists."

After he read it, he literally used the phrase "Wow. So you weren't just bullshitting me." He proceeded to encourage me to pursue what I had convinced him was my aptitude and even gift, named a few movies I should watch, and even started talking about how he thought I was totally cool. Nice! I don't have many stories that make me sound that good.

Also, I got a 12/12 on my SAT essay, and a 750/800 on the writing section in general, which put me in the 99th percentile. Superfly.

I hate teachers who think they know everything. Educate a fool, you get an educated fool. At least this one had the balls to admit he was wrong about you.

Keep writing! (Although if you're really a writer, you don't need encouragement; you just can't help yourself.)

I came across your blog. It's dope. Very well put together. I have some new crap on mine. It's absurd compared to yours. Check out my latest post called "So you're a sissy, let me help"

Thanks, bub.

Hiya Josh - just stopped by to see how you are, and it sounds like you're doing great - I was sooooo impressed by your writing on numbers - and that you managed to put your point over so succinctly. So impressed!

Well done also on your sats - excellent results! :-)
